World Day of Social Justice

Understanding the International Day of Social Justice: Empathy in Action

Today, we're delving into a crucial topic that resonates deeply with our shared humanity: social justice. As we explore the International Day of Social Justice, we'll uncover the significance of this observance, examine real-world examples of social justice in action, and reflect on its profound impact on individuals and communities worldwide.

Unpacking the International Day of Social Justice

First things first, let's get to know our star of the show: the International Day of Social Justice. Designated by the United Nations, this day serves as a poignant reminder of our collective responsibility to uphold principles of fairness, equality, and dignity for all. Observed annually on February 20th, it provides a platform to raise awareness about pressing social justice issues and inspire action towards positive change.

Examples of Social Justice in Action

Now, let's zoom in on some real-world examples of social justice initiatives that are making waves:

  • Gender Equality: Did you know that globally, women still earn less than men for similar work? Yep, it's a stark reality. Social justice advocates are working tirelessly to close this gender pay gap, promote equal opportunities for women in the workforce, and combat gender-based discrimination.
Statistic: According to the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2021, it will take an estimated 135.6 years to close the gender gap in economic participation and opportunity worldwide. That’s more than the lifetime of our children’s generation. Many of the young people ACET Nigeria and the Shining Star project work with struggle against gender stereotypes and fewer opportunities for girls. But thanks to the amazing support of all our donors, we can improve the lives of so many girls and young women.
  • Racial Justice: In many parts of the world, racial minorities face systemic barriers to education, employment, and healthcare. Organisations like Action for race equality are shining a spotlight on racial injustice, demanding accountability, and advocating for meaningful reforms to address structural racism.
Statistic: In the UK, 29% of ethnic and religious minority groups experienced racial discrimination in education and 29% experienced discrimination in employment, highlighting the deep-rooted disparities in UK society (Source: Guardian).
  • Access to Education: Education is often hailed as the great equalizer, but for millions of children worldwide, access to quality education remains elusive. Social justice activists are championing efforts to eliminate barriers to education, particularly for marginalized and underserved communities.
Statistic: According to UNESCO, an estimated 258 million children and youth were out of school in 2018, with poverty, gender discrimination, and conflict among the leading barriers to education. Imagine all the people in the UK, France, Spain, and Germany added together - that’s about 258 million people! Our partners in Eastern Europe help many young people who are encountering barriers to education due to war and conflict. They work alongside young people to improve their mental health and how they cope with trauma.

Impact on People's Lives

Other ways social justice issues can impact people’s lives and communities are health disparities, economic equality, and human rights violations, such as freedom of expression and being treated humanely across the world.

Poverty and income inequality perpetuate cycles of limiting opportunities for individuals, including access to vital healthcare. Millions of people throughout the world are unable to access vital healthcare. This can have life-threatening consequences, especially with marginalized groups experiencing higher rates of illness and mortality.

What You Can Do

Feeling inspired to take action? Here are a few ways you can contribute to social justice efforts:

So, let's roll up our sleeves, join hands, and be the change we wish to see in the world.
