Racial identity project

Rachel has also been working with Michelle on our new racial identity project, by developing sessions and materials for the Primary part of this.

For instance, one session with year 4 helped the children celebrate our differences but also identify and challenge stereotypes. With much discussion, they sorted a range of statements about different races and cultures into ‘fact or stereotype’ and looked at different people with different backgrounds, ages and physical attributes and chatted about what common stereotypes there might be about each – and then looked at challenging these.

The children’s favourite part of the session was exploring and celebrating their own diversity, which they ended by making paper people representations of themselves using a range of materials.
